Walter L. Wright, MD is a native of Raleigh, NC. He is the second of five sons. Dr. Wright graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1967. His interests have always been in music and science. Therefore he felt it was a natural progression to attend St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC where he graduated in 1971 with Bachelors degree in both Chemistry and Biology. He underwent his graduate training at State University in New York and was awarded a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry in 1975. He completed a post-doctoral year at Perdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1976. He attended medical school at his beloved UNC Chapel Hill, graduating in 1980. In 1981 he completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He then went on to complete his residency in Ophthalmology at Duke University Eye Center in 1984 at which time he became Board Certified. He has been in private practice in Kinston, NC for the last 34 years.
Dr. Wright continues to work full time with special interest in treatment of diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration.
Dr. Wright has three adult children. He is married to Washington, NC native, Page (Deborah Bright). They currently split their time between a small farm outside of La Grange, NC and in Washington, NC on the greens of the Washington Yacht Country Club. His interests are quite eclectic. He spent seven years as a private pilot of a Bonanza A36 with his wife traveling nationally and abroad. When he is not working he enjoys playing golf, raising Angus beef, boarding horses, and playing music, specifically the keyboard.
