Glaucoma Specialist - Peter V. Mitrev will be Starting in June 2016

Peter V. Mitrev, M.D. Dr. Mitrev received his Bachelor's degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado in 1984 and continued his medical training in Colorado, receiving his medical degree in 1989. After completing an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center he served in the United States Air Force as a Flight Surgeon in England during the first Gulf War. Upon his honorable discharge from military service, Dr. Mitrev returned to the United States to complete his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident. In 1999, he completed a post-graduate year of study as a Glaucoma Clinical Fellow at Tuft's University New England Eye Center and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston in Massachusetts. Since moving to Virginia, he served as Clinical Research Director for the Thomas R. Lee Center for Ocular Pharmacology and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Mitrev has not only instructed many Ophthalmology resident surgeons in the field of Glaucoma and Cataract surgery but also given numerous lectures to medical students. He has received the Faculty Member of the Year distinction awarded by the Ophthalmology residents at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. While he has been in private practice for the past 15 years he has also volunteered his services at the Chesapeake Care Free Clinic for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases.

Dr. Mitrev has co-authored several articles on both Glaucoma and Cataract surgery and presented scientific posters on original research at national ophthalmology meetings. He holds a patent for a unique Glaucoma surgical device.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Mitrev enjoys gardening, skiing, surfing, bike riding and numerous outdoor activities.

  • Military Service: Received health professions scholarship from the USAF and served in England from 1990 — 1995 as Flight Surgeon with United States Air Force in Europe during the first Gulf war. Tours of duty included Turkey, Spain, France, and Africa.
