Our optical shops in Washington, Elizabeth City and Kitty Hawk offer many lens types as well as treatment options for your new eyeglasses:

Lens Types

Single vision lenses have one prescription that is throughout the entire lens.  This lens is prescribed for one purpose.  Some people may require several different prescriptions for different tasks.

Lined bifocal or trifocal lenses allow the wearer to see at two or three distances using the same lens.  As the name implies, there will be visible lines in the lens defining the different sections. Lined style lenses are often used for small children or for those desiring wide peripheral vision and who are willing to sacrifice range to get it.

Progressive lenses are also called no-line bifocal lenses.  The very top part of the lens works well for distance and the bottom portion gets progressively stronger ending with the strongest portion at the very bottom for reading.  A progressive lens allows the wearer to use a portion of the lens to see clearly at nearly any distance.  They allow a seamless transition between the powers rather than the sudden “jump” that occurs between powers in a lined lens. Additionally, from a cosmetic standpoint, there will be no visible line in the lenses.

Lens Treatments

Glare-Free Treatment is an important part of any prescription eyewear.  Without it, lenses simply do not work as well as they could.  Rather than reflecting back light from computer screens, fluorescent lighting or headlights it forces the light through the lens bringing the wearer clearer, sharper vision and less fatigue.  Durability is also increased because high quality glare-free treatments will repel things like dust, smudges and water.

Polarized lenses are dark sunglass lenses that block reflected glare off of smooth surfaces. When driving, glare can come from other vehicles, snowy or wet roads and even from your own windshield.  Rather than just darkening glare as tinted sunglasses will- the glare is actually eliminated.  Polarized sunglasses are a must for anyone that spends any time on the water.  If you are investing in a good pair of sunglasses this is definitely the way to go!

Mirrored lenses are a reflective coating that can be applied over any type of lens but are usually applied over tinted or polarized lenses.  They come in a wide variety of color choices and are effective in blocking glare.

Transitions lenses adapt when lighting conditions change.  These dynamic eyeglass lenses are designed to be worn indoors and will to automatically adapt (darken) when outdoors to give you a more comfortable viewing experience while providing eye protection from damaging UV light.  Learn more about the different Transitions lenses here.

Tint can be added to most lenses to change the colors that you see.  There are many colors to choose from, each offering a different look and benefit.

Scratch resistant coating is a popular lens coating that protects the lenses from scratches.
