Jitendra Swarup, MD attended medical school at the prestigious Howard University. At Howard University, he served as a Chief Resident at the Sinai Hospital in Detroit, Michigan where he was involved in the initial FDA approval for the excimer laser. Dr. Swarup has been involved with the excimer laser since 1993 and has been performing LASIK surgery since its introduction in 1996.
Dr. Swarup is one of the world’s leading cataract surgeons. He lectures nationally on subjects pertaining to cataract surgery, intraocular lens implantation and management of complications. He has been involved in many cataract and intraocular lens research studies to investigate new technologies. Dr. Swarup has authored, as well as co-authored numerous papers and textbook chapters pertaining to cataract surgery, complications of cataract surgery and the development of new cataract technologies.
Dr. Swarup specializes in therapeutic and cosmetic plastic surgery, glaucoma surgery, laser surgery for diabetic eye disease and micro-incision (no stitch) cataract surgery. He is the only area physician offering mono and multifocal implants to patients.
Dr. Swarup has received regional and national awards for his scientific presentations. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a respected member of many medical and ophthalmologic societies including the Academy of Ophthalmology.

In his leisure time, Dr. Swarup, his wife Aruna and their two children enjoy boating, traveling and relaxing on the unspoiled beaches of the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
